A video has surfaced on X, the microblogging platform, showing gunmen shooting as the purported Ikwerre Local Government Chairman moved to the council’s premises in Rivers State.
@Topboychriss, the poster, named Israel Abosi as the chairman in the video he shared on Monday.
“Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government, Israel Abosi, retakes control of the council. Supporters of Nyesom Wike should apply to be an athlete in the next Olympics. They met their match and took to their heels. Cowards! Nobody has the monopoly of violence,” @Topboychriss captioned the video on X.

@Topboychriss suggested that people loyal to Minister of FCT Nyesom Wike had earlier taken control of the Ikwerre local government council, but Abosi’s supporters displaced them.
In the video, the person behind the camera could be heard screaming “Make dem come burn council. We dey here. Make dem come now. How many dem dey?” as he moved the camera.
“Who goes that baga wey dey challenge for Ikwerre local government? Where dem, where dem?” he shouted repeatedly.
The video shows many men wielding guns, some were shooting into the air.
EQ did not see security officials in uniform in the clip.

“We dey council. Ikwerre local government has been taken over officially.”
Abosi could be seen climbing on the car, accompanied by three men one of which was holding a gun, while he addressed the men inaudibly pointing to a burnt part of a nearby building.
EQ reported how hoodlums set fire to no fewer than two local government secretariats in Rivers on Monday morning.
The violence came hours after Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), ordered the withdrawal of police personnel from all 23 LGAs in the state.
After they withdrew, thugs struck Eleme and Ikwerre LGAs and set them on fire.
They also used explosives in Emohua LGA after David Omereji, the newly sworn-in chairman, swore in his deputy and councillors.
