Police officers stationed at the Lekki Toll Gate area of Lagos State have started shooting teargas canisters at scores of people marking the fourth remembrance of the EndSARS protest victims.
Exactly four years ago, young Nigerians had a nationwide march against police brutality, high-handedness and harassment that had become the order of the day.
Many of the protesters were killed when state actors attacked them at Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020, making the spot a symbolic area for yearly remembrance.

Marking its anniversary on Sunday, some banner-bearing Nigerians proceeded peacefully to Lekki but met the Nigeria Police Force (NPF)’s armed Rapid Response Squad.
“Time to bring Buhari and Sanwo-Olu to justice. EndSARS massacre,” a large banner displayed by the demonstrators read.
However, the armed operatives started shooting tear gas canisters at these demonstrators who were calling for the arrest and prosecution of Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and former President Muhammadu Buhari. The Lekki Toll Gate massacre happened under Buhari and Sanwo-Olu’s watch.
Since it became a tradition for protesters calling for justice for dead protesters to converge at Lekki Toll Gate each year, the police have never failed to show up at the same place, intimidating and applying force against EndSARS advocates.
