VIDEO: Gunshots Heard as EFCC Attempts to Arrest Yahaya Bello at Governor’s Lodge

There were gunshots on Wednesday night at the Kogi State Governor’s lodge in the Asokoro District in Abuja as operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) attempted to arrest former Kogi governor Yahaya Bello.

According to Channels TV, security operatives at the lodge fired the shots in a bid to resist the EFCC.

The platform said the antigraft agency and other operatives stationed in the area were the only ones there at the time of the incident.

After the altercation, normalcy returned to the area as Bello evaded arrest. The commission maintains that the former governor is wanted.

Bello earlier claimed he honoured the EFCC’s invitation, but the commission responded by saying he was misleading the public. The EFCC claimed he had yet to appear before them or follow due process.

On Wednesday, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesman, said, “Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr Yahaya Bello is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.

“Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”

Meanwhile, Bello is expected to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday to stand trial over 19 charges of embezzlement and money laundering amounting to N80 billion.
