No More Demolition. Lagos Gov’t Gives Ayetoro Residents 3 Months to Make Amends

After issuing the residents of Ayetoro Community in Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) a five-day ultimatum to vacate their homes on Monday, the Lagos State Government has now provided an alternative which could allow them to remain.

Olamide Emorioloye, Chairman of the Ayetoro Community Development Association (CDA), told EQ that government representatives visited the community on Friday morning and instructed them to make certain changes to the appearance of their homes.

He said that the representatives told members of the community association that they were giving them three months to standardise the colour of their roofs, adding that the environment must be neat at all times.

“They said we should unify the colour of our roofs, either blue or red, and prevent plank marketers from operating in our community. They also said the changes must be made within three months,” Emorioloye told EQ.

“They made it clear that they need to report back to the governor and that we must ensure the canals are clear and flowing, with the entire area kept clean.”

He said that although his community would try to keep up with the three-month deadline, they would need help from well-meaning people and organisations to help them raise funds.

Earlier, EQ reported that the Lagos State Government sent thugs and mobile police officers to burn down a sawmill next to the community on Monday, leaving homeowners in Ayetoro in despair.

When EQ called the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development via the phone number on its Facebook page for comments, they did not respond. EQ sent a text to their line but has received no response as of this publication.
