The Nigerian Police Force on Thursday fired live bullets at protesters in Maiduguri, Borno State, with a journalist reporting it having to abruptly end his coverage for safety reasons.

Umaru Kirawa, a News Central journalist, was feeding the station’s studio with updates on the turnout of the protest when he heard gunshots and started to say: “One person is down.”

Asked by his colleague in the studio if that was in relation to the protest, Umaru answered: “Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes; one person, one person, one person.”

Asked for his exact location, he said:

“Right now, I am at Bulunkutu area and people are just running, shouting that they need improvements and a lot of things from the government.”

“They just took one person out… This is the situation of things now.”

The in-studio journalist then warned him: “Umaru, I will need you to watch your back and take cover right now.

“There are people behind you running. Umaru Kirawa, we’re going to come back to you. We need you to take cover and find somewhere safe to give us your update.”

The #EndBadGovernance kicked off today in almost every state of the country against inflation and high cost of governance amongst other pain points.

It is expected to last until August 10.
