It May Only Be N22,000 But This GTB Customer Needs His Money Back After 7 Months

Henry Ndubuokwu, a Lagos State resident, has detailed how Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) failed to reverse the N22,000 it debited from his account for a failed PoS transaction.

Ndubuokwu told EQ that the incident happened between January 16 and 17.

“I made a purchase at a store on Lagos Island on January 16 and offered to make payment with my debit card,” said Ndubuokwu.

“Unfortunately, the transaction got declined and I had to look for an alternative means of paying for the things I bought.

A Debit Notification Ndubuokwu Received

POS Transaction Notification

“On January 17, I surprisingly received a N22,000 debit alert from GTB for the same transaction that was declined the day before.”

Ndubuokwu said he subsequently visited a GTB branch in Gbagada, Lagos, to lodge a complaint.

“After filling a dispute form, the official who attended to me said I would receive a feedback within eight days,” the Lagos resident said.

“Six days later, however, I received a notification from the bank, and it stated that the dispense error I logged was declined. I visited the bank two additional times and the officials I interacted with gave me the same response that my refund request was declined.”

Ndubuokwu told EQ that he also visited the store where the debit card transaction had originally been declined.

“In trying to trace the transaction, the store manager actually contacted the aggregator in charge of the PoS terminal in my presence,” he said.

“In the end, I was told that there was no such transaction on the said date. So, why then would GTB still debit me for a transaction that was declined?

“All the efforts I made at getting my money back have not been fruitful. I have sent several reminders to GTB but the bank has refused to send my N22,000 back to me. It has been seven months.”

EQ sent an email to GTB for a reaction to the complaint on Friday, but it had not been responded to at press time.
