Michael Okusanya, a businessman in Ibadan, Oyo State, has narrated how OPay staff at their office in Ring Road, Ibadan, ill-treated him and misplaced his MTN SIM card when he visited their office to resolve an issue on October 21.
Okusanya told EQ that all he wanted was to remove his wife’s account from his PoS machine and link his own account, which he had initially bought the machine for but hadn’t used due to a BVN issue.
He said that when he visited their office as requested, a staff informed him that they would need to take the PoS machine, even though there was no valid reason for it.
According to Okusanya, OPay had assured him at the time of purchase in 2022 that the device would remain with him unless he chose to return it.

“But I wasn’t willing to return it. I only wanted to transfer the original account number meant for the PoS to the machine and remove my wife’s account, which had become frozen at the time. Upon visiting their office, they requested it, and I showed them,” Okusanya said.

“When they said they had to keep it with them, I asked for the reason but didn’t get a response. Instead, one of them seized it forcefully. Later, I met with Giwa Dayo, who directed me to Miss Kunfayo and Adebimpe. Unfortunately, these staff mistreated me, going so far as to forcibly take the PoS from me.
“Despite informing the manager about this, he said he could do nothing. He then offered me an analogue PoS instead, which I find unacceptable considering I paid full price for the original device.”

To worsen matters, Okusanya said, his MTN SIM card inside the PoS machine which they took from him, has gone missing. He said that he called the office when he remembered his SIM card was still in it, but they claimed nothing was there.
He emailed OPay after realising he had been treated badly on the same day, but the fintech giant had yet to respond.
When EQ emailed OPay for comments on the matter on Thursday, they did not respond at press time.
