FLASHBACK: In 2018, Tinubu’s Minister-Designate Was Impeached as Kano Speaker for ‘Incompetency’

On Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Yusuf Abdullahi Ata as the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development at a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Ata’s appointment came after Tinubu decided to reshuffle his cabinet by approving the reassignment of 10 ministers to new portfolios, relieving five of their duties and nominating seven new ministers for onward transmission to the Senate for confirmation.

The five ministers relieved of their duties were Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, the Minister of Women Affairs; Lola Ade-John, Minister of Tourism; Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education; Jamila Bio Ibrahim, Minister of Youth Development; and Abdullahi Gwarzo, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development.

Apart from Ata, other nominated ministers include Nentawe Yilwatda, Muhammadu Dingyadi, Bianca Odumegu-Ojukwu, Jumoke Oduwole, Idi Maiha and Suwaiba Ahmad.

Prior to his latest appointment, Ata once served as the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly. His tenure as speaker was short-lived as he was forced to resign after spending less than a year in office.

REMOVAL AS SPEAKER

Having only spent 10 months in office as the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Ata was impeached for alleged incompetence on July 30, 2018.

Ata’s impeachment was endorsed by 27 out of the 40 lawmakers in the assembly.

While moving the impeachment motion, the 27 lawmakers deemed it necessary to impeach Ata due to “incompetency in running the affairs of the house since he assumed office”.

Kabiru Alhassan Rurum replaced Ata as the new Speaker.

Ironically, Rurum was forced to resign as speaker in 2017 over corruption allegations. It was after he resigned that Ata was sworn in.

With this, Rurum became Ata’s successor and predecessor as Kano State Assembly Speaker within two years.
