The Abuja Police Command is interrogating Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, who physically assaulted Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.
Abuwatseya made a video recording of his altercation with Ikwechegh on Sunday evening. This video, now viral, captures the lawmaker threatening to disappear the driver “and nothing will happen”.
The lawmaker also slapped Abuwatseya and threatened to beat him up.
Reacting to the development on Monday, Muyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), issued a statement saying the police had begun probing the matter.

“The Nigeria Police Force is aware of the incident between a Bolt driver, Mr Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, which took place on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja,” the statement read.
“The FCT Command is actively handling the case following Mr Abuwatseya’s official report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
“The Police Force also urges the public to refrain from using the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others, as such actions undermine the values of impartiality that the IGP’s office upholds.”
On Monday afternoon, ChannelsTV reported that Josephine Adeh, Public Relations Officer of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, confirmed Ikwechegh was undergoing questioning.
The outfit credited her with the statement, Ikwechegh “is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning”.
