6 Days After His Abduction on NSA’s Orders, #EndBadGovernance Activist Michael Lenin Still Missing

Six days after Michael Lenin, one of the conveners of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, was arrested on the orders of the National Security Agency (NSA), he is still missing and there is no update on his whereabouts.

Damilare Adenola, one of the organisers of the Take It Back Movement, told EQ on Sunday that little is known about Lenin’s whereabouts since his abduction on August 5.

He said that after Lenin was arrested with two others, Sankara and Sodeeq, they were taken to the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

“After Lenin’s abduction on August 5, we found out that the action was based on the order of the NSA,” he said.

“The NSA had no direct power to arrest Lenin, so it carried out this order through the police IRT. Sankara, one of the people arrested with him, told us this after his own release.”

Adenola said while Sankara was released alongside one other person, Lenin is still being detained with no clear clause.

“Our lawyers went to the IRT to understand why they are still detaining Lenin, but no one is saying anything.

“The guys were just picked up based on frivolous reasons. Their was a press conference around Sankara’s home that day where they spoke, after which they were picked up.

Michael Lenin.

“They were picked up in a Gestapo manner which shows that we’re in a state people are no longer safe or secured for demanding their rights.

“Whenever people demand accountability, they begin to act funny even when they have committed no offence.”

When EQ asked if the #EndBadGovernance protests had ended, he said Nigerians would still take to the streets because the government has not addressed their needs.

“The protest has not ended; don’t be surprised when you start seeing spontaneous protests spring up on the streets,” he said.

“The government will have to learn the hard way because they can’t tame people who are hungry or in need. Rebellion will be their natural response.”

Between August 1 and 10, Nigerians took to the streets in many parts of the country to protest against hunger and the rising cost of living.
